How About Mother's Day?

Is Mother's Day okay?  How would you answer this question, should somebody ask you?  If you said "Yes", would you be able to tell the person why you believe it to be okay?  I would say "No.  I don't believe it is", should someone ask me.  And let me tell you why.

The Scriptures tell children to honour their parents.  (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:1-3)  It does not tell us to pick one day out of the whole year to honour Mother.

My mother has a birthday, as every ordinary mother does.  I guess you could say that is her special day (though we try not to be too extravagant there either :-)  However, she does not need that day in order to feel honoured.  We strive to honour her in our daily lives.  When Yahweh gives us a commandment, we are expected to keep it.  Thus, considering Yahweh commands we honour our parents, I think, or rather know, that it is wise to do just that, but we don't need to set aside one day to honour Mother.  The same with Father's Day, Grandparents' Day, Mother-In-Law's Day, etc.  We should be honouring them every day.  It seems pretty divided that we honour Mother one day, Father another day, Grama and Grampa another day, etc. etc.  In the Scriptures, in Matthew 12:25, Yahshua says, "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand."  Realistically, doesn't Mother's Day, etc. seem like a divided way of doing things?

Let us take a look at the encyclopedia.  According to the New Standard Encyclopedia, Mother's Day "dates far back to the mother-worship practiced in ancient Greece."  That does not sound very good, especially for those who profess to be worshipping the True Creator.

Well, I'll let you think on these things.  By the way, did you know that we keep special Days too?  They are ones that are commanded in the Scriptures.  We would love you to be able to keep and enjoy them as well.

"Thus saith Yahweh, 'Learn NOT the way of the heathen,... For the customs of the people are VAIN..."  Forasmuch as there is none like unto THEE, O Yahweh; THOU art Great, and THY Name is Great in Might."  Jeremiah 10:2,3,6
